Black Greeks Upset That White Sorority Won Sprite Step-Off Contest

Black Greek Organizations partnered with Sprite to launch this dynamic youth event. Everything was wonderful until a white sorority (Zeta Tau Alpha) actually won the competition and received $100,000. Comments have been going up by the thousands on the internet from many African Americans who were not pleased at the outcome. Many of the comments came from black Greek members who felt that they had been robbed of something that meant so much to them culturally.

"Coca Cola corp. (Sprite) did it because they could use these European American women to sell a popular African American activity to a wider (whiter) audience, and therefore sell more products.

It’s just like HIP HOP people. These women are the EMINEM of STEP."

"This was funny, demonstration on how to copy whatever Black folks do and get rewarded i.e. Vanilla Ice end Eminen. I noticed the crowd was with them since it such a novelty to find this many white girls with rhythm without a pole… where is Kanye West when you need him?"

"That is why you don’t understand. To you and the masses this was nothing more than a dance competition. Sprite and their corporate folks didn’t care, and honestly, it was advertised for Black Greeks in the Divine 9 family.

 

Those "steps" that get done are historic in nature and there shouldn’t have even been a judge on the panel who didn’t belong to one of our orgs.

 

As a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, that entire escapade was pathetic.

 

It isn’t about the people who won, it was the fact that they shouldn’t have even been in it in the first place."

 

Don’t get me wrong, there were also many African Americans who supported these girls and applauded their performance and you can see the comments on various websites.

 

In my opinion, Zeta Tau Alpha did a wonderful job and after watching the videos of each performance, it was a very close competition. You can see the performances from the top three sororities at blackstar69.com and be the judge for yourself.

 

I think that people of all races have to realize that at some point in time, there will be the chance that another race can be better than you at something that you have been doing well for years. If want to continue to leave in peace, we just have to accept that fact.

Okur’s agent, Marc Fleisher said through an email Monday that his client might be opting out, but still hadn’t decided yet.  Meanwhile for Boozer, he had expressed of wanting to opt out of his contract too. He said a few months back that he might end up with the New Jersey Nets.  Okur is set to earn $9 million next year while Boozer is expected to earn $12 million. Both players have been integral in helping their team reached the playoffs this season.
